Nuns

  • Govea's book indicates that around 1919-20 Alice boarded with the "nuns at the Convent of Perpetual Adoration", but was later able to become a day-school student only and return home at night. It would seem that the references is to the order founded in Brussels in 1857 by Père Eymard, which established a house in Montreal, where Alice Hallé received her schooling. This order is a direct ancestor, by way of its mission in Cleveland, of the Our Lady of Angels Monastery in Hanceville, but that transfer didn't happen until the arrival of Mother Angelica in 1962. Though not directly related, the Benedictine Sisters of Cullman (incorporated in 1903), shared traditions with the Perpetual Adorers, and staffed parochial schools in the area. I don't know if they had a boarding school in Birmingham, or if it was realistic to imagine that Alice commuted to Cullman (or if she moved from Cullman to Birmingham when she became a day student). --Dystopos 09:32, 7 August 2010 (PDT)
