First?

I'm a little vague on how it was determined he was the first American killed in the Pacific during World War II if 413 other crew died on the same ship during the same attack. --Lkseitz 05:56, 12 August 2008 (PDT)

  • I don't know the details, except that the ship was hit by aerial torpedoes and strafed with gunfire. The hole town in the port side of the hull caused her to capsize. Most of those killed died below deck during the days it took rescuers to reach them. I got the blurb on Ellsberry from here. I suppose it is possible he was downed by gunfire before the ship itself capsized. It is also possible that he was just one of the first to be identified and reported. --Dystopos 06:26, 12 August 2008 (PDT)
