Anyone know what the route of 31 was before the Red Mountain cut? I presume, if you were heading north from Homewood, that it curved to 29th Ave. S, then curved around The Curve to 18th St. S. and proceeded over Red Mountain by Vulcan. But I don't know how it got back over to where Carraway Blvd. is. --Lkseitz 20:44, 24 July 2006 (PDT)

alabamamaps.ua.edu has Historical Maps of Jefferson County, including Highway Dept. maps from 1937, 39, 42, 60, 67, 82 and 95. It looks like the route for 31 proceeded up 20th Street to 8th Ave N (Highway 78) and you were forced to take 78 East to 26th St (Carraway Blvd) before rejoining the N/S route through North Birmingham. --Dystopos 22:02, 24 July 2006 (PDT)
I tried that last week, but the server was down. Comparing the maps, it seems the exact route through downtown B'ham has changed slightly a few times. In '67, it looks like it went up 20th St. N to 3rd or 4th Ave. S, then up 24th(?) St. to 8th Ave. N (or maybe 6th) where it cut over to Carraway. Not quite enough detail to tell for sure, but at least I have a general idea. Thanks. --Lkseitz 10:30, 25 July 2006 (PDT)
