Successful or not

While both WAPI's history page and Wikipedia say WSY was unsuccessful, the recent B'ham News article says it actually was very successful, but Alabama Power didn't want to fund it. I've gone with the latter for now. Oh, and nobody says what WSY's frequency was. --Lkseitz 08:38, 7 February 2007 (PST)

  • Might want to talk to a radio engineer. The question of "what frequency" may have been moot at the time, when people were building radio receivers themselves. --Dystopos 09:04, 7 February 2007 (PST)

WAPI, Birmingham, Ala. - - Founded as the 500 watt WMAV Auburn, Ala., on Oct. 3, 1922, the station was owned by Alabama Polytechnic Institute. In January 1925, WSY Birmingham was donated to the school which operated both stations until they were combined as WAPI. U. of Alabama and Alabama College joined in the ownership of WAPI in 1929. In 1937, the license was acquired by The Voice of Alabama Inc. Station subsequently increased to 10 kw (in 1952) and to 50 kw (in 1958). The Birmingham News Co. leased WAPI in 1953. When the News was sold to S. I. Newhouse in 1956, the lease was purchased and Newhouse became owner. - from members.aol.com/jeff99500/62.html
The WSY radio station of Alabama Power Co. is the main feature of this display. Since WSY began broadcasting in 1920, the radios in this cabinet are representative of those that would have been used to listen to the broadcasts. Many listeners built their own radios from instructions in newspaper articles in the “Birmingham Age Herald”. WSY was only the 127th station in the U.S. approved for broadcasting in April 1922, but within 2 years more than 1000 licenses had been issued by the U.S. Department of Commerce. - from alabamahistoricalradiosociety.org/img_0363.htm
