Map

Does the "map" variable not have a place here? --Dystopos (talk) 13:36, 19 December 2017 (PST)

  • I noticed its absence when I changed the template on those articles today. Yes, it should be added to the template. I'm guessing it didn't exist yet on the main school template when I created the "former" one. I didn't have time to add it this morning. I'll try to do so soon. But we have the answer to our other question; Wikimedia will indeed ignore unknown parameters. --Lkseitz (talk) 14:30, 19 December 2017 (PST)
    • I updated all the articles that use the infobox at present. --Dystopos (talk) 08:09, 20 December 2017 (PST)

Principal

We should get rid of this field, I think. I think we should keep enrollment, though. That says something about the size of the school even if it varies. --Dystopos (talk) 09:19, 20 December 2017 (PST)

  • Uh, there never was a "Principal" field on this template. I can put enrollment in, but a school's final enrollment will almost always be well below its peak enrollment. --Lkseitz (talk) 05:27, 21 December 2017 (PST)
    • I've been thinking of showing enrollment as a range (min-max). Whatever makes it most informative (and acknowledging that our research is always grossly incomplete) --Dystopos (talk) 06:29, 21 December 2017 (PST)
      • I think I was just seeing "principal" in my markup (here), and didn't notice it was ignored on the page. That was my mistake. --Dystopos (talk) 06:32, 21 December 2017 (PST)
        • Ah, yes, a enrollment range could be useful. --Lkseitz (talk) 07:27, 22 December 2017 (PST)

Colors/mascot

These need to be optional fields. A lot of elementary schools never had any such thing. --Dystopos (talk) 12:08, 20 December 2017 (PST)

  • I cannot create truly optional fields until we have "#if" functionality. You'll note most of the current "optional" fields merely have defaults and appear regardless. The only exception is the image because if you don't have an image, there's nothing to display (since it doesn't have a text header that goes with it). I harangued you about #if in the past, but eventually gave up. --Lkseitz (talk) 05:27, 21 December 2017 (PST)
    • Hm. That's something I install? --Dystopos (talk) 06:29, 21 December 2017 (PST)
      • OK. I see it. (mediawiki.org/wiki/Extension:ParserFunctions). I'll start building up my gumption. --Dystopos (talk) 06:43, 21 December 2017 (PST)
        • [Chants] Gump-tion! Gump-tion! Gump-tion! :-) I should make a disclaimer. Apparently Wikipedia has moved beyond using these functions in templates and has some new system for them. I have not learned this system, so installing this is fine with me. I'll just have to hope I can see the Wikipedia templates histories to see how to properly use them, although I don't think it's difficult. --Lkseitz (talk) 07:29, 22 December 2017 (PST)
