The Love Story of Vulcan and Electra
"The Love Story of Vulcan and Electra: A Romance of Birmingham" was a 33-part serialized feature published daily in the editorial section of The Birmingham Post from May 31 to July 7, 1926.
The feature was written under the byline of Dr B. U. L. Conner, a pseudonym for columnus E. T. Leech. Each chapter was accompanied by a small line drawing illustration by Peg Lundgren.
In the narrative, the statues of Vulcan, then resident at the Alabama State Fairgrounds, and Electra, newly installed atop the Alabama Power Building, were able to come to life between midnight and 2:00 AM. They met and pursued a romance, but his desire to make her into a demure housewife conflicted with her desire to occupy the center of everyone's attention.
The Post printed a collected section with the complete story for sale by mail order. Leech also adapted the story into a "photoplay" which was exhibited at Loew's Temple Theater.
