Timothy R. Levine is a distinguished professor in the UAB College of Arts and Sciences and chair of the Department of Communication Studies.

Before coming to UAB, Levine was a professor at the School of Media and Communication at Korea University in Seoul, South Korea.

Levine is known for publishing research outlining a "Truth Default Theory" (TDT), an analytical framework for researching the social conditions that contribute to the success or failure of attempts at deceit. Bestselling author Malcolm Gladwell became interested in Levine's writings on Truth Default Theory and interviewed him for his 2019 book, Talking to Strangers.
