The UAB Police & Public Safety Department is a police department which conducts law enforcement operations and physical security at the UAB campus and UAB Medical Center. The 120-person department is headed by Associate Vice President and Chief of Police Anthony Purcell. It was formally organized in 1972 and occupied a building at 910 15th Street South until 1992, when the department was moved to the former University Credit Union building located at 1117 14th Street South. In 2018, after they moved into a new building, the former Credit Union building was demolished.

The Department is divided into divisions handling campus patrols, criminal investigations, hospital security, professional standards, and housing/special operations. Special units handle accreditation, communication, compliance, crime prevention and training.

In 2024 the Birmingham City Council approved a request by UABPD to install license plate readers at the edges of campus on University Boulevard.
