University of Alabama System
The University of Alabama System was created in 1969 to help manage the individual campuses and the health system. It was established on June 16, 1969 by Govenor Albert Brewer. Finis St. John IV is the current Chancellor of the system. The system offices are located at 500 University Boulevard East in Tuscaloosa.

Governance
The System is governed by The Board of Trustees of The University of Alabama as stipulated by the Alabama Constitution. The Board executes its governance responsibilities through a chancellor, who serves as the chief executive officer of the System. A president heads each campus with responsibility for campus administration and reports directly to the Chancellor and through the Chancellor to the Board of Trustees. The Board of Trustees and the Chancellor delegate certain administrative functions and maintain such offices as deemed appropriate to meet the administrative needs of the System. The Chancellor also provides linkage between the System and various components of state and federal governments, as well as other educational groups and organizations.
In 1976, the Board of Trustees named Joseph Volker as the first chancellor of the System.
In 2018 and 2019 the system claimed to have conducted a "national and international" search for a chancellor to take the position left vacant by the sudden retirement of Ray Hayes. No finalists were announced before long-time board member and interim chancellor Finis St John IV was offered the permanent position along with a substantial increase in compensation.
