Virginia Cobb

Virginia Cobb, (Mary Virginia Jemison) was born May 31, 1898, in Tuscaloosa, Alabama, and died September 7, 1987, in Birmingham. She was the first to open a business in what later became a cluster of shops and restaurants in an alley that ran between 13th and 14th Avenues South and parallel to 20th Street South in Birmingham, which became known as Cobb Lane. She was instrumental in the revitalization of the Five Points South neighborhood. In 1982, Cobb Lane was dedicated in her honor. She was a charter member of the Junior League of Birmingham and St Mary's on-the-Highlands Episcopal Church.
