William James

William R. James (born c. 1928 in Birmingham) is a retired Catholic priest.

James entered the seminary at the age of 16 and was ordained a priest in his 20s. Inspired by Pope John XXIII's Second Vatican Council, he adopted liberation theology and participated in the modernization of the church.

He joined the staff of the Cathedral of the Immaculate Conception in Mobile and participated in Civil Rights demonstrations. For his involvement in protests, he was dismissed as chaplain to the Mobile Police Department and transfered to St Jude Catholic Church in Montgomery.

He later returned to Mobile as pastor of St Patrick's Catholic Church, retiring in 2011.
