W. D. Colby

Willis Dwight Colby (born c. 1854 in Defiance County, Ohio; died August 8, 1938 in Birmingham) was an interior decorator and founder of the W. D. Colby Decorating Company, which later became the Birmingham Decorating Company.

Colby was the son of Jonas and Almira Hull Colby of Ohio. He married the former Mabel Esther Carroll on Setpmber 24, 1884 in Defiance, Ohio.

They resided in the W. D. Colby residence at 2505 7th Avenue South where they raised two children Carroll and Ethlyn. Carroll eventually served as vice-president of the Birmingham Decorating Company.

In 1924 the Colbys moved to a small classicially-styled house at 2931 Highland Avenue where Mabel planted flowers and hosted meetings of the Psychology Study Club. They attended Independent Presbyterian Church and celebrated their 50th wedding anniversary quietly at home.
