Wiseblood is a "musical collective" headed by guitarist/songwriter Ashby Pate and bassist/producer Shawn Avery, former members of The Ashes. The group, which records on its own Weownthesky label, recruits other musicians to play for specific tracks. The group takes its name from the novel by Flannery O'Connor, whom Pate credits as an influence in his songwriting.

The group rarely performs live. Wiseblood first performed together on September 8, 2006 at Freunde Deutscher Sprache und Kultur during ArtWalk. For their July 10 album release they played a show at Bottletree with Clint Wells, Thomas Richie and Alan Rogers.

Wiseblood's first album, Wiseblood Vol. 1, was recorded over a three-year period and released in July 2008 with a jacket illustration by Chris Lawson.
