George Wofford residence
The George Wofford residence (also called Villa Wofford-Clark) is a 12,000 square-foot Italian-style mansion, designed by Charles McCauley and constructed in 1927 for oil company owner George Wofford at 2509 Salisbury Road in Mountain Brook. When constructed, the house cost Wofford $500,000.
The design features numerous arched loggias and open terraces. The stucco walls are capped by a terra-cotta tile roof. The house includes five bedrooms and nine baths on a 5-acre lot with a pool, pool house, guest house, a fountain, a pavilion, and a play house built to look like the main villa.
The interior of the house includes original multi-headed "European style" showers, cedar-lined closets, a built-in central vacuum, and circulating chilled water for three drinking fountains. Murals painted by an Italian artist grace the main rooms and are inset with semi-precious stones. Doors, ceiling beams and fireplace surrounds are hand-carved.
The Woffords and their son George, Jr kept the home for 43 years until they sold it to Dr George Scofield in 1970. Dr James Andrews bought it from them in 1989 and sold it in 2006 to current owners Colby and Laura Clark.
Decorators ShowHouse
The Wofford residence serves as the "Decorators ShowHouse" from April 28- May 14, 2006. Participants included Mary Helen McCoy and Lee Ann Ford (library and powder room), Susan Kidd (great room), Nancy Pickard Blach (dining room), Jean Clayton (solarium), Brackey Stewart (guest bedroom), Maurine Abney (guest bedroom), Ginny Aday (girl's bath), Jeffery Hall (artist's studio and porch), Holly Shirley (bedroom), Marsha Satterfield (master bedroom, retreat, and bar), Jenny Edwards (kitchen hall, rear entrance) and 27 others. Proceeds from the event benefit the Alabama Symphony Orchestra.
