Deerfoot Church of Christ
Deerfoot Church of Christ is an Church of Christ congregation which meets at 5348 Old Springville Road in Clay.
In 1913 the established West End Church of Christ acquired a former Presbyterian meeting house on the first block of 60th Street South in Woodlawn for $3,668, to serve the eastern end of the city. The Woodlawn Church of Christ was founded in 1914 as the second such Church of Christ in Birmingham. The new congregation added two classrooms to the rear of their building in 1918, and then built two more on a mezzanine level inside the auditorium in 1939.
Woodlawn Church of Christ was active in evangelizing to the wider public with tent meetings, radio and newspaper sermons, a jail ministry, international missions, and financial support for new Churches of Christ in the area.
In 1957 the church constructed a new building at 5328 1st Avenue North at a total cost of $171,000. It held its first services there on August 18. During the long tenure of pastor Jerry Jenkins the church sponsored "The Living Word" television program, which debuted in 1967 and ran for 43 years on the Church of Christ-affiliated Gospel Broadcast Network, until his death in 2010. The church also added programs for youth and for the deaf, and established a mission in Belize.
In 1979 the church acquired a 10-acre parcel on Roebuck Parkway off of I-59 in Robeuck and constructed a new church building at a total cost of $1,500,000. The church changed its name to Roebuck Parkway Church of Christ when it moved to that building on June 12, 1983. A major expansion in 1994 added a fellowship hall along with new classrooms and administrative offices.
By 2009 the congregation saw a need to move even further east. It acquired a 9-acre parcel on Deerfoot Parkway in Trussville as a future building site. Rather than build there, however, the congregation purchased the former Springville Road Church of Christ and began meeting there under their new name on August 28, 2016.
