Revision as of 10:05, 10 May 2016

This is a List of Birmingham homicides in 2016. It includes homicide cases occurring within the city limits during the calendar year. Note that a "homicide" refers to the cause of death as determined by a medical examiner, not to the commission of the crime of murder as charged by police and prosecutors.

37 homicides have been reported in the city as of May 6, putting the city on pace for 107 for the year. Based on the 2014 census estimate of 212,247 population, that would represent 50.4 homicides per 100,000 residents. Birmingham had 96 homicides in 2015 and a record low of 62 homicides in 2014. The recent record high was 141 in 1992. At this time in 2015 there had been 33 homicides reported.

The city has averaged 8.8 homicides per month, or one every 3.4 days. There were 9 incidents in January, 6 in February, 10 in March, 9 in April and 3 so far in May. The longest stretch without a homicide was the 14 days between January 29 and February 12. Five violent deaths were reported on Sundays, 6 on Mondays, 6 on Tuesdays, 4 on Wednesdays, 5 on Thursdays, 7 on Fridays and 4 on Saturdays.

Of the 37 reported homicides, four were ruled justifiable by prosecutors. The police department therefore acknowledges 33 chargeable homicides, all of which have been classified as murders. Suspects have been identified in 22 of those cases, apprehended in 19, and charged in 15.

At least 29 deaths were shootings, three were caused by stab wounds, and one from strangulation. At least twelve homicides took place inside homes, twelve on the streets, four in yards, five at apartment complexes, one outside a nightclub, and two at places of business. Sixteen were reported in the West Precinct, nine in the East Precinct, one in the South Precinct and nine in the North Precinct. Seven deaths were the result of domestic disputes, eight others from ongoing grudges, one from a dispute over a dice game, one from a bar fight, and three others resulted from robberies. Twenty-nine victims were male and eight were female.
