Robert F. Bumpus (born c. 1933) is the former superintendent of the Midfield, Homewood, and Hoover school systems.
Bumpus began his education career around 1960. He earned his B.S. from Bethany Nazarene College and M.A. and Education Specialist degrees from the University of Alabama. He served as a teacher, principal, director of middle and elementary schools, and director of instruction for Decatur City and Jefferson County Schools. One of the schools he served as principal of was McNeil Junior High School in Hueytown.
Bumpus served as superintendent of Midfield City Schools from about 1975 to 1985. He then became superintendent of the Homewood City Schools from 1985 to 1991, replacing Michael Gross.
In 1991, he became the relatively new Hoover City School's second superintendent. He had been was one of only two people pursued for the position. One of the major programs Bumpus spearheaded during his time as Hoover's superintendent was the construction of a third middle school.
Bumpus announced his retirement in November 1995, effective May 31, 1996. Hoover later named their new middle school, a project Bumpus had started, Robert F. Bumpus Middle School in his honor.
Bumpus later joined the Hoover school board in 2003, but resigned one and a half years into his five-year term. He cited personal reasons, primarily having to do with the care of his siblings who were in nursing homes or suffering from medical problems.
