After participating in an iron pour at Sloss in 1994 Spencer dedicated herself to the creation of metal art through welding, forging and casting. She studied under Vaughn Randall at Sloss Metal Arts and completed the welding program at Bessemer Tech in 1997. She founded her own Fluffy Metal studio as well as working to expand the instructional programs at Sloss to include welding and blacksmithing. She worked there as an instructor and artist-in-residence and later joined UAB's Department of Art & Art History as a studio technician. She founded a metal arts studio, MESH Collective Art which has produced commissioned public art for Red Mountain Park.
Spencer married filmmaker Chris Holmes in 2007 and has one son.
