The UAB Humanities Building (originally University College Building No. 3) at 900 13th Street South was part of the first major building project undertaken in 1970 for the development of a College of General Studies at UAB. It was funded in part by federal and state grants awarded through the Appalachian Regional Commission.
The building was designed by Jones, Crow & Mann Architects of Huntsville. Ground was broken at the site of the building in 1971, and it was completed by Dunn Construction in 1972. The building's dedication was held on March 20, 1973. It was renamed the "Humanities Building" in 1983.
The Hideaway Cafe was located on the third floor of the building. It opened in the 1970s and closed in the late 2000s. The Visual Arts Gallery opened on the ground floor in 1974.
