St James African Methodist Episcopal Church is located in North Avondale at 4200 5th Court North. It was organized in the winter of 1887 by the Reverend C. C. Montgomery, a trained blacksmith. It initially met in a saloon known as the White Elephant.The church's brick building was erected in 1929.
