510 Gadsden Highway is a vacant 2-story, 35,000 square-foot commercial building located on a 2-acre parcel at 510 Gadsden Highway in Huffman.
The building was constructed as a SportPlex fitness center in 1983. The facility included weight rooms, a gymnasium, racquetball courts and a swimming pool, as well as meeting rooms, card tables and a full-service bar. At its height, SportPlex had more than 3,000 members.
On January 1, 2012 SportPlex was acquired by NeXT Total Fitness. Unforeseen expenses in repairing a major gas leak and addressing building code deficiencies forced the center to close its doors on November 26, 2014. The property was acquired by the Birmingham Park and Recreation Board
