BirminghamWatch is an online news publication published by the non-profit Alabama Initiative for Independent Journalism. The organization, founded in 2014 by Mark Kelly, Carol Nunnelley and Jerome Lanning, focuses on public-service reporting on government and politics to promote informed citizen engagement.
Nunnelley, a former Birmingham News managing editor, was the executive director and editor until her retirement in 2021. Lead news editor Virginia Martin assumed additional duties as the organization conducted a search for a new leader. André Natta was named executive director in January 2024.
The Alabama Initiative for Independent Journalism is supported by the Los Angeles, California-based Institute for Nonprofit News and the Community Foundation of Greater Birmingham, and its "Media Savvy" public forum programs have been supported by the Alabama Humanities Foundation.
