Charles D. Hart was elected as Clay's first mayor on Tuesday, July 11, 2000 with 82 percent of the vote. Born in 1959, Hart graduated from Auburn University in May 1985 from the College of Veterinary Medicine. Prior to being elected mayor, he was most well known within the community for opening the Clay-Chalkville Animal Clinic in 1987. Running unopposed in 2004, Hart is currently serving in his second term as Clay's mayor.
