Chetopa is a former coal mining community adjoining Linn Crossing north of Five Mile Creek and the Southern Railway and just east of Alabama State Highway 5 in western Jefferson County.
Mine operations were taken over by the Drummond Company. On July 24, 1977 three mine workers died in a hoist accident at the Chetopa Mine.
The United Mine Workers instigated a shutdown of production at Chetopa Mine in July 1993. Drummond closed the Mary Lee No. 1 Mine and the Chetopa Mine in 1997, idling 725 workers.
