Daniel Acker Sr
Daniel M. Acker Sr (born December 17, 1936; died July 16, 2021 in Alabaster) was an educator, coach and politician. representing District 4 from 1992 to 2016.
Acker was the son of Preston and Vernie Acker. He was the grandson and nephew of former Shelby County Sheriffs, the brother of a Fayette County Commissioner, and the cousin of a Mayor of Columbiana.
Acker attended Valley High School, Samford University, the University of Alabama, and UAB. He worked as a teacher and coach at Thompson High School from 1959 to 1975. He also served on the Alabaster City Council and as chair of the Alabaster Water & Gas Board.
Acker was serving as administrator of the Shelby County Area Vocational Center when he challenged the Shelby County Commission District 4 incumbent in the 1992 election. He retired from the school system in 1996.
Acker suffered a stroke in 2013 and lost some of his vision, making him unable to drive. He cited his health as one reason he did not run for re-election in 2016.
Acker also served as a deacon at Siluria Baptist Church and later as a founding member of Westwood Baptist Church where he also taught Sunday School.
Acker and his wife, Judy raised four children: Melody, Daniel Jr, Harmon and Jade.
