David Frings
David M. Frings is a former mayor of Alabaster and director of the Oak Mountain Interpretive Center.
Frings is a 1973 graduate of Shades Valley High School and earned his bachelor of science in geology from UAB. In 1976 he began working as a geologist in the Alabama Power Company's construction department. He transferred to Southern Company in 1998, becoming its general construction superintendent in 2000. He is a licensed geologist in Alabama and is also certified to practice in Mississippi. He retired from Southern Company in 2006.
Frings and his wife, Jennifer, have operated the Fossil Site, a nature store for children, since 1999. They have three daughters, Haley, Holley and Heidi.
Frings ran against incumbent Alabaster mayor Steve Rauch in 2000 along with five other candidates. Frings and fellow opponent James Kramer managed to squeeze Rauch out of the run-off, which Frings then won by 98 votes. Frings was re-elected in 2004. He was elected for a third term in 2008, defeating three challengers with 56% of the vote in the general election. In the 2012 Shelby County municipal elections, he lost a runoff to challenger Marty Handlon.
In 2009 the Internal Revenue Service placed a lien on property owned by Frings due to unpaid personal income taxes from 2005 and 2006.
