David Whiteside founded Black Warrior Riverkeeper in September 2001. He became involved in the Waterkeeper Alliance during the Summer of 1998, when he accepted a job from Robert F. Kennedy, Jr., his godfather and President of the Waterkeeper Alliance. He attended The Altamont School in Birmingham, Alabama and graduated from the University of Vermont (UVM) with a degree in Environmental Studies. His senior thesis at UVM studied the process leading up to Waterkeeper Alliance's approval of several autonomous Alabama programs, including Black Warrior Riverkeeper, Choctawhatchee Riverkeeper and Hurricane Creekkeeper. Today, David serves on the Board of Directors and volunteers countless hours raising funds to support the organization. He also provides internet support, organizes events, outreach work, and countless other contributions.
