Don McDermott represented District 1 in the Birmingham City Council for one term from 1997 to 2001.

In August 2007, McDermott was arrested at his Trussville home and charged with possession of obscene material involving victims younger than 17. A submachine gun was also taken from the house by Federal Bureau of Alcohol, Tobacco, Firearms and Explosives agents who assisted in the arrest, which stemmed from a federal investigation.
