Fultondale Elementary School

Fultondale Elementary School is an elementary school in the Jefferson County school system serving grades 1-6 for the Fultondale area. It is located off of Central Avenue, overlooking U.S. Highway 31. Enrollment for the 2009-10 school year was 807. The principal is Cynthia Cornelius.

Fultondale Elmentary was previously located at 1500 Walker Chapel Road. Fultondale Mayor Jim Lowery proposed the city build the new school even before funds were freed from a court challenge. The funds were later released. Construction of the new school by Wyatt Construction Company took 11 months and cost $17 million. Students first began attending the new school on January 8, 2007, after the winter break. The new school includes modern features such as a media center and cafetorium.

The old school was torn down to make way for development of the Fultondale Colonial Promenade shopping center.

By 2010 the 3-year old school was experiencing overcrowding. Four portable classroom trailers were brought in that spring. County school officials and local leaders are in the early stages of planning for a new middle school. There is also a possibility of adding classroom wings to the elementary school.
