John B. Longwell was the head coach of the Howard Bulldogs in 1909, 1911 and 1916-1917.

Longwell took over the Howard College program from interim coach Winton M. Blount, Sr. in 1909. His first team went 5-2-1 and outscored opponents 82 to 30 over 8 games. J. C. Donnelly coached the next season. When Longwell returned the following season, the 1-6-1 1911 Bulldogs only managed 6 points to their opponents 158 in an 8-game season. Lonnie Noojin coached the next three seasons, succeeded by Eugene Caton in 1915. Longwell returned in 1916 and guided the Bulldogs to a 6-4 record (146 points scored to 92 points against). He coached the first five games of the next season before resigning. Bill Streit completed the 3-3-1 season.

His overall record with the Bulldogs was 14-14-3 in 31 games. He ranks 11th in games coached, 10th for number of wins and 16th in winning percentage. His teams averaged 8.74 points per game.

During the 1916-1917 season, Longwell also coached Howard's basketball team, which had not played since 1905. That reconstituted team went 3-5 with wins against teams organized by Anniston Presbyterian Church, the Acipco YMCA and the Birmingham Railroad Power & Light YMCA.

In 1919 Longwell became the 16th head football coach for the New York University Violets. In one season there he compiled a 4-4-0 record, which was good enough for 10th place among NYU coaches for total wins and 6th for winning percentage.
