John Manning

John Riley Manning (born 1862 - died April 5, 1889 in Bessemer) was an officer of the Bessemer Police Department, killed in the line of duty.

Manning had been on the force for 18 months when he and two other officers were attempting to serve a warrant. The suspect asked for a match to light a lantern and then shot Manning in the chest with a Winchester rifle as he stepped inside. The suspect escaped the scene but was later apprehended and convicted of the murder. He was hanged on May 9, 1890. Manning was survived by both parents and several siblings.
