Schantz earned his bachelor of arts at George Washington University in Washington D.C. in [[1977]] and a masters of divinity from Yale University in [[1981]]. He completed his PhD in history at Emory University in Atlanta, Georgia in [[1991]].
Dr. Schants graduated with a BA degree from George Washington University in 1977 where he was a member of Phi Beta Kappa. He following his time at George Washington he would go on to receive a Masters of Divinity from Yale University in 1981. In 1991 he received his PhD in history from Emory University.

After completing his doctorate, Schantz served as associate provost and professor of history at Hendrix College in Conway, Arkansas. He joined the BSC faculty in [[2009]] as provost and professor of history. After the departure of [[David Pollick]] in August [[2010]] he was named interim president of the college, serving through July [[2011]].
Before coming to Birmingham-Southern Dr. Schantz served as associate provost and professor of history at Hendrix College located in Conway, Arkansas. He joined the BSC staff in 2009 serving Provost and Professor of history. Following the departure of David Pollock he served as interim president of BSC from August of 2010 to July of 2011. During his as history Professor he has mostly focused on American history subjects such as the Puritans in America and W.E.B. Du Bois. He has also published two books Piety in Providence: The Class Dimensions of Religious Experience in Antebellum Rhode Island and Awaiting the Heavenly Country: The Civil War and America's Culture of Death.

Mark S. Schantz (born c. 1955) is a professor of history and former interim president of Birmingham-Southern College.
