New Castle is a former mining town located on New Castle Road (Jefferson County Road 121) northeast of Fultondale. It was founded by John T. Milner on behalf of the Newcastle Coal and Iron Company.

The town established a New Castle Post Office in 1874 and once housed its own New Castle Lodge No. 742. It was the birthplace, in 1915, of pitcher Lum Harris, and was one of the filming locations for the 1925 silent film "Coming Through".
