Robert Walker Sr

Robert Walker Sr (died October 4, 2009) was a Deputy Chief in the Birmingham Police Department.

Walker grew up in the Southtown housing community. He joined the department in 1969 and was promoted through the ranks. He was named to command the South Precinct in 1995 and was promoted to deputy chief in 1998, overseeing the patrol division and, later, the detective division. He retired from the department in 2004.

Walker was known as a demanding leader in the department and earned the nickname "Night Vader" for his insistence that policing continue at high performance throughout night shifts.

An avid golfer, Walker also coached the department's basketball team. He died after a long illness in 2009 and was survived by his wife, Carolyn, and five children. He is buried at Elmwood Cemetery.
