The "'ruby-throated hummingbird'" is the most common species of hummingbird found in Alabama, and seen mostly during the summer during migration. During the winter, ruby-throated hummingbirds migrate to Mexico and Central America using the Mississippi Flyway, which is a migration path that follows the Mississippi River. The birds leave the United States from the Gulf of Mexico and fly non-stop to their destination. In order to survive the journey, the hummingbirds double their body weight before they migrate over the gulf.
