Sonja Rieger (born Ansbach, Germany) is a photographer and a professor and former chair of the UAB Department of Art and Art History.

Rieger was adopted and grew up in the northeastern United States. She earned her bachelor of fine arts at the University of Massachusetts-Amherst and a master of fine arts at Rutgers University. She completed a study program at the Whitney Museum of American Art in New York in 1978 and joined the UAB faculty a year later.

She is known for her large-scale urban scenes, typically colored with neon light.
