The Sugar Shack was a topless dance club located at 7548 U. S. Highway 78 in Northern Jefferson County near Sumiton. It was opened in 1996 by Shannon Daniel in the building formerly housing Desperado's, a strip club operated by her uncle, Steven Wayne Roberts.
The Jefferson County Commission denied a liquor license to Daniel, who was 23 years old when she first applied. Judge Scott Vowell overturned their decision, ruling that the criteria used by the county were too vague. The Commission subsequently rezoned the property to prohibit adult entertainment businesses at the site, but Daniel successfully sued to void that ruling as well.
