Morrises

I don't know offhand. If I come across any links in my reading, I'll be sure to update the relevant articles. Thanks for your contributions! --Dystopos 18:01, 30 October 2006 (PST)

  • Regarding Shades Mountain, Virginia Foscue's Place Names in Alabama says that it is named for the valley, called "Shades of Death" by both the Chickasaw Indians and white traders. She cites a 1960 Master's Thesis by Thomas N. Hagood at Birmingham-Southern, "Place Name Patterns in Jefferson County, Alabama." --Dystopos 21:56, 31 October 2006 (PST)
  • Without reading Hagood's thesis to see where the info originated it's hard to be sure, but generally-speaking, Foscue's research is about as authoritative as you can get for place names around here. It would be exciting if BhamWiki were able to publish an authoritative counterclaim, but for that we'd need some sound documentation. For my part, I doubt they are the same. I would think something would have been made of their relationship before if it were so. Morris (and Elizabeth) are pretty common names. --Dystopos 08:32, 1 November 2006 (PST)
