Warrior

Warrior is a city encompassing 7.88 square miles directly north of Kimberly on the Jefferson County-Blount County line. It adjoins Kimberly to the south and is traversed by I-65 and Highway 31. Warrior is located at 33°48'48.985" North, 86°48'41.238" West

The city takes its name from the Warrior coal fields, which opened in 1872 in the vicinity. The coal fields were named, in turn, after the river that drains them. The town, which was built on a spur of the L & N Railroad, was originally Warrior Station.

Demographics

The 2005 census estimate indicated a population of 3,037.

As of the census of 2000, there were 3,095 people, 1,330 households, and 894 families residing in Argo. The racial makeup of the city was 83.2% White, 15.4% Black or African American, 0.4% Native American, 0.2% Asian, and .8% from two or more races. .3% of the population were Hispanic or Latino of any race.

There were 1,330 households out of which 28.6% had children under the age of 18 living with them, 49.1% were married couples living together, 16.1% had a female householder with no husband present, and 31% were non-families. 28.5% of all households were made up of individuals and 32.2% had someone living alone who was 65 years of age or older. The average household size was 2.43 and the average family size was 2.98.

In the city the population was spread out with 22.8% under the age of 18, 9.5% from 18 to 24, 26.8% from 25 to 44, 24.1% from 45 to 64, and 16.8% who were 65 years of age or older. The median age was 38.8 years.

The median income for a household in the city was $28,143, and the median income for a family was $35,967. Males had a median income of $32,306 versus $20,486 for females. The per capita income for the city was $14,919. About 12.1% of families and 11% of the population were below the poverty line.

Government

Warrior's mayor is Rena Hudson.

The city operates its own police and fire department.

Jefferson County Schools operate Warrior Elementary and Corner High School within the community.
