Sumter or Sumpter, formerly called Belle Sumter or Belle Sumpter) is an unincorporated community and former mining town located at the head of Dry Creek, southwest of Adger and Johns, along the L&N Railroad in southwestern Jefferson County.
The coal mine, accessing the Blue Creek Seam, was opened by the Debardeleben Coal & Iron Company in the 1880s and acquired in 1892 by the Tennessee Coal, Iron & Railroad Company. The seam was later strip mined by the Twin Pines Mining Co. for Drummond Company.
