Dr. Charles E. Bugg is the outgoing CEO and Chairman of the Board for Birmingham based BioCryst Pharmaceuticals Inc. set to retire in 2007.

Education

Dr. Bugg recieved his Ph.D. in Physical Chemistry from Rice University in 1965 followed by two years of postdoctoral study at the California Institute of Technology. In 1968, he accepted a position at UAB where he has remained serving as Director of the Center for Macromolecular Crystallography, Associate Director of the Comprehensive Cancer Center, and Professor of Biochemistry and Molecular Genetics during his tenure at the institution. Currently he holds the title of Professor Emeritus in Biochemistry and Molecular Genetics at UAB.

BioCryst

In 1986, Bugg served as co-founder of BioCryst. Between 1987-1989 he served as the companies first CEO and between January 1986 to November 1993 he also served as the Chairman of the Company’s Scientific Advisory Board. From 1995-1996 heal also served as the companies president. Set to retire in 2007, Bugg has served as BioCryst's Chairman of the Board and CEO since 1993.
