The Firehouse Shelter, sometimes referred to as the Old Firehouse Shelter is a men's homeless shelter and recovery center located in retired Birmingham Fire Station number six at 1500 3rd Avenue North. The building is touted as being the oldest standing fire station in the city, built at the turn of the century. The shelter is operated by the Cooperative Downtown Ministries, and offers dinner, breakfast, and showers to overnight guests. Lunch is served daily to both men and women, whether they reside in the shelter or not. The shelter was founded in 1983.
