A former professional baseball player, Jake Wells was a theatre impresario from Virginia who owned, operated or managed vaudeville theatres throughout the Southeast. In 1908, he was manager of Lake View Park and the Electric Park Casino. His most prominent project was the Lyric Theatre, which he built in 1913 in partnership with Louis V. Clark..
