James R. Barnette was a Baptist minister and Samford alumnus. He served both Samford University and Brookwood Baptist Church prior to his death from Creutzfeld-Jakob disease on February 22, 2021. He was 59 years of age.

He returned to Samford to serve as Minister to the University in 1994. He also taught in the Religion Department. In 2005 he stepped down as Minister to the University and became a full-time member of the religion department. Within the department he directed the Preministerial Scholars Program]]. He also served Brookwood Baptist Church first as preaching pastor and then as senior pastor. Due to his illness he retired from Samford in 2020.
