Bessemer Maintenance Camp

The Bessemer Maintenance Camp is a staging facility for Jefferson County road maintenance crews servicing the western and southern sections of the county.

The camp's address is 3295 King Street in the unincorporated community of West Highlands northwest of Bessemer and southwest of Hueytown.

In 2006 the camp employed 177 people, 129 of whom were classed as unskilled laborers. It serves as as a base for crews responsible for maintaining 1,100 miles of roadway and 2,000 acres of right-of-way. Its annual budget varied between $8.3 million and $9.2 million between 2003 and 2006.
