John Amos

John F. Amos is a former dean of the UAB School of Optometry, serving from 2000 through the end of 2009.

Amos earned his bachelor of science and doctor of optometry at the Illinois College of Optometry and also has a master of science from Indiana University. He served in the Vietnam War as a captain in the Air Force from 1966 to 1969, providing eye care to wounded personnel, for which he received the Bronze Star.

Amos joined UAB's faculty in 1972 and founded the School of Optometry's residency program before he was named department chair in 1994. He was named interim dean before becoming permanent dean in 2000. He has served as president of the Association of Schools and Colleges of Optometry and has published over 100 articles and papers in peer-reviewed journals, as well as two books and numerous book chapters.

Amos and his wife Catherine, also an optometrist, have two children.
