attendance

  • Just noticed that Dabney's Birmingham's Highland Park gives the attendance figure as 450, not 2,000. Clarification would be appreciated. --Dystopos 21:05, 12 December 2006 (PST)
    • The Iron Bowl History webpage lists 226 Auburn fans and 220 Alabama fans for a total of 446. That's two that put it in the 450 range. --Wheresdib 10:12, 1 February 2007 (PST)
      • If I were going to rewrite history, I'd say that there were approximately 1,550 onlookers who were fans of neither team. No one counted them then, and they still don't count now. (j.k.) --Dystopos 11:10, 1 February 2007 (PST)
        • Now Jim Baggett's column in Birmingham magazine says "with an estimated 5,000 people in attendance,...". I'm emailing him for the skinny. --Dystopos 21:12, 1 March 2007 (PST)
          • Baggett's source was Clyde Bolton's book "The Crimson Tide: The Story of Alabama Football.. I'm reverting to 450 with a note. --Dystopos 10:00, 2 March 2007 (PST)
  • That's the most sensible solution. I believe the 450 number is probably more realistic, knowing where the game was held and the fact that American football was just taking off at that time. --Wheresdib 12:11, 2 March 2007 (PST)
  • The Age-Herald reporter at the time described the large crowd repeatedly as being around 5,000 people. Apparently the 450 sometimes heard refers to the number of people coming by special trains from Auburn and Tuscaloosa for the game. Alvin Hudson's book reprints the story in full and has some great photos in it. You can see it at the Linn-Henley library (A copy I tried to buy via Abebooks.com was apparently already sold). Hudson is my hero. --Dystopos 16:58, 14 April 2007 (PDT)

Two 1893 Iron Bowls

  • There appears to have been 2 Iron Bowls played in 1893. The one this article refers to was played on 2/22/1893. Another was played in Montgomery on 11/30/1893. Can I move this one to something along the lines of 1893 Iron Bowl (February) and create a new one for the game held in November? I am open to suggestions. I have enough info to create stubs for every single game until from 1893 to 2001. --Wheresdib 10:17, 1 February 2007 (PST)
  • I prefer the "Bowls" description. As you can tell I went ahead and moved it. I have reworked the page a little but it definitely needs more work in the headline paragraph. --Wheresdib 11:24, 1 February 2007 (PST)
