Buster

Great picture!. I've created an article, Buster Waits, and cropped the photo to just the portrait for the purpose of display there. When you sent this photo to the Alabama Humanities blog, you seemed to be speculating about his role as mascot to the GCS company team. Were you able to verify that ? --Dystopos 09:07, 30 September 2010 (PDT)

I am not sure if this is the correct way to respond to the question posed to me about my uncle, Buster Waits. As I explained, Buster was the son of Major Prestley Waits who was the manager or superintendent of Grasselli Chemical Company in the Birmingham area from roughly 1913 to 1920. My mother (Buster's sister) told me about his team mascot status with the baseball team associated with Grasselli. She died at age 92 in 2005. So that is the basis for my statement that James Prestley (Buster) Waits was the mascot for Grasselli Chemical Company. However, mascot may not be the right word here but I am at a loss to determine what other word would be more appropriate. The colored image of Buster Waits was prominently displayed in my parents home for many years. Perhaps he was a bat boy but I am not sure that industrial leagues used youngsters of this age. In 1913 Buster would have been about eight or so. He was born in late December 1904. My mother was born in early December 1912. Buster was born in the Grasselli Heights community as were his other siblings except my mother who was born in West End. There were ten children in this family born between 1901 and 1917.
That works. Great history, there. --Dystopos 21:41, 30 September 2010 (PDT)
