Birmingham-area churches that were part of the Methodist Episcopal Church, South, such as Walker Memorial and Bethlehem were part of the Alabama Conference until 1870, when the conference was divided. At that time, all Birmingham-area churches of the Methodist Episcopal Church, South (and its successor denominations the Methodist Church and the United Methodist Church) became members of the newly-formed North Alabama Conference.
