Avner Dorman
Avner Dorman (born April 14, 1975 in Israel) is composer-in-residence for the Alabama Symphony Orchestra's 2010-11 season.
Dorman is the son of Zeev Dorman, principal bassoonist for the Israel Philharmonic, and grew up in Tel Aviv. He learned cello and piano as a child, but only became really interested in classical music in high school. He continued to pursue music during his three years of service to the Israeli army, arranging hundreds of pieces for military ensembles.
Dorman studied at Tel Aviv University under Josef Bardanashvili, then moved to New York where he studied with John Corigliano at the Juilliard School. He earned his doctorate in musical arts. He has also studied at the Tanglewood Music Center.
Dorman's compositions have won awards throughout his active career. In 2000 he became, at 25, the youngest composer to win Israel's Prime Minister's Award. His compositions have been performed by the Israeli Philharmonic, the New York Philharmonic, the Los Angeles Philharmonic, the Munich Philharmonic, and the Hamburg Philharmonic.
Dorman's "Saxophone Concerto" was premiered on October 28, 2010 by the Alabama Symphony with soloist Joshua Redman. The ASO also commissioned an orchestral piece to be premiered on March 25-26, 2011 with violinist Gil Shaham.
